The Danger Consonants — TH, V/W, Z/J, F

All levels55 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Four consonant zones carry almost the entire ‘Indian accent’ signature: TH said as थ/द, V and W merged into Hindi व, Z replaced by ज (जीरो for zero), and फ/फ़ confusion. None of these needs talent to fix — each has a simple MOUTH POSITION you can learn in a mirror in five minutes. This chapter gives you the four positions, the money pairs, and the drills.
TH — tongue OUT
  • Tongue tip peeks between the teeth, air flows over it. think/three (no voice)
  • this/that (with voice). Not थ, not द — those keep the tongue inside.
V vs. W — teeth vs. lips

V: upper teeth touch lower lip + voice (vine). W: lips round like ऊ, teeth touch nothing (wine). Hindi व sits in between — that’s the whole problem.

Z — the buzzing स

Z = ज़ (say स with throat vibration), never ज. zero = ज़ीरो, not जीरो.

The golden rule: these are POSITION errors, not ability errors. Your mouth already makes every required movement — Hindi has स (for z’s position), ऊ (for w’s lips), and dental sounds (near th’s zone). The fix is assigning the right position to the right letter, then drilling the money pairs until the assignment is automatic. Mirror + 5 minutes daily + this chapter’s pairs = done in three weeks.

Hindi थ/द hit the back of the teeth (a stop). English th lets air flow over a tongue tip that peeks out.
Step 2

When to Use It

what the mirror shows SEE the tipno tip = थ air over ita flow, no hit NO voicethroat still
Use 1

TH voiceless (think, three, thanks) — the tongue-out स

Mouth position: tongue tip gently between the teeth; blow air over it; NO voice. It is friction, not a tap. Hindi थ is a t-hit with breath — wrong machinery.
  • think, three, thirty, thank you, month, both, birthday, faith, north
  • Mirror check: you must SEE your tongue tip. If you can’t see it, you’re saying थ.
  • Money pairs: three (tongue out) vs. tree (tongue inside) • thank vs. tank • thought vs. taught • faith vs. fate
  • Drill sentence: ‘Thirty-three thousand, three hundred and thirty-three’ — tongue out on every th.
same mouth+throat BUZZES
Use 2

TH voiced (this, that, brother) — the same position, plus voice

Identical tongue-out position, but the throat vibrates (hand-on-throat test from Chapter 1). Hindi द keeps the tongue behind the teeth — close, but natives hear the difference.
  • this, that, these, those, the, they, them, then, there, brother, mother, father, weather, together
  • Money pairs: they (tongue out) vs. day • then vs. den • though vs. dough... careful, dough is दो — though is tongue-out
  • Reality check: this is the highest-frequency sound zone in English — ‘the’ alone appears in nearly every sentence. Fixing TH upgrades every sentence you speak.
  • Drill: ‘This, that, these and those brothers’ — five voiced th in a row.
V teeth on lipW lips round
Use 3

V vs. W — the vest/west split

V: bite your lower lip lightly with upper teeth, add voice — a buzzing फ़. W: round your lips into a tight ऊ, then glide — teeth touch NOTHING. Hindi व does neither fully, so Indians swap them randomly (famously: ‘wery vell’).
  • V words: very, van, visit, video, value, seven, over, invest, verify, advance
  • W words: we, will, want, water, one (वन!), work, window, sweet, twenty, quick
  • Money pairs: vine/wine • vest/west • vow/wow • veil/whale • V-8/wait
  • The killer phrase, drilled: ‘We visited a very well-known website.’ — W (lips), V (teeth), V (teeth), W (lips), W (lips).
  • Mirror check for W: your lips must form a visible circle. For V: your teeth must be visible on your lip.
Z = ज़air keeps flowinga buzz, no touchJ = जtongue TOUCHESthen bursts
Use 4

Z vs. J — and the F check

Z = स + voice (ज़, the nukta sound). J = ज, a completely different stop sound. Urdu-exposed speakers have ज़ already; others substitute ज — and ‘jero’, ‘jip’, ‘joo’ are instantly heard. F = फ़ (lip-teeth friction), not फ (a p-hit with breath).
  • Z words: zero (ज़ीरो), zone (ज़ोन), zoom, size (साइज़), prize, busy (बिज़ी), music (म्यूज़िक), easy, thousand (थाउज़ंड), rupees... rupees ends in ज़: रुपीज़
  • Watch the hidden z: the letter S is often pronounced ज़ — is (इज़), was (व्अज़), his, these, because, please, always
  • Money pairs: zoo/जू (imaginary) is heard as ‘ju’ • prize (प्राइज़) vs. price (प्राइस) — Chapter 1’s throat test decides
  • F check: photo = फ़ोटो, phone = फ़ोन — the PH spelling is always फ़, never प+ह.

Hindi व does neither fully, so give each letter its position: W = lips, V = teeth. Drill the killer phrase daily.

Hindi Concept Note

और छुपा हुआ z याद रखो: is = इज़, was = व्अज़, because = बिकॉज़ — S अक्सर ज़ बोला जाता है।
F = फ़ (होंठ-दाँत की रगड़), फ नहीं (जो प+हवा है)। PHOTO = फ़ोटो।
रोज़ का drill: आईने के सामने 5 मिनट — ‘thirty-three’, ‘very well’, ‘zero size’ — position देखो, आवाज़ मिलाओ।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
thank you = थैंक यू (tongue inside, त-family hit)
Tongue OUT between teeth, air friction: THank you
थ is a stop with breath; th is friction. The mirror never lies — see the tongue.
‘I am thirty’ heard as ‘I am dirty’ (द/ट zone)
thirty = tongue-out th + irty
One tongue position separates your age from an insult.
zero, zone said as जीरो, जोन
ज़ीरो, ज़ोन — the buzzing स
ज is a different consonant entirely. Say स, switch on the throat: that’s ज़.
‘wery vell’ — V and W swapped
very (teeth on lip) well (lips rounded)
Assign positions: V = teeth, W = lips. Drill the killer phrase daily.
one, want said as ओने... वन with lazy lips
one = वन with lips ROUNDING into the w-glide (u-one)
One starts with a w-sound despite the spelling: वन, not ओन.
is, was, because with स endings: इस, वास, बिकॉस
इज़, व्अज़, बिकॉज़ — the hidden z
The letter s between/after vowels usually voices into ज़. Throat test: it should vibrate.
Flow or hit? And the hidden Z
FLOW or HIT?English: FLOW (hold it)Hindi: HITTHvsथ · दthink · thisZvsजzero · zone (buzz)Fvsफphoto · phoneHIDDEN Zthe letter S that buzzesisइज़wasव्अज़histhesebecauseबिकॉज़pleasealwaysthroat test: it should vibrate
English th, z and f are friction you can hold; the Hindi stand-ins are a single hit. Many an S is really a Z.
Step 5

Signal Words

Position assignments:
th (think/this) tongue tip visible between teeth; voiceless vs. voiced by throat
v upper teeth on lower lip + voice; w rounded lips, no teeth
z and ‘voiced s’ (is, was, because, please) ज़, the buzzing स
ph always फ़
Mirror for positions; throat for voicing; YouGlish for verification
