Present Unreal Conditional (Second Conditional)

Intermediate50 min25 questions8 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

The Second Conditional imagines a DIFFERENT present or an UNLIKELY future. The situation is not real — you don’t have the money, you aren’t the CM, prices probably won’t crash. Formula: If + Simple Past, would + base verb. The past tense here does NOT mean past time — it is the ‘unreal’ signal from Chapter 1.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Formula
If+Simple Past, would+V1
If I had the budget, I would buy the corner unit.
Negative
If he didn’t travel so much, he would see his kids more.
The WERE rule
With ‘be’, use WERE for every subject
If I were you... / If she were here...

The golden rule: past tense + would = imagination, not history. ‘If I had a helicopter’ says nothing about yesterday — it says I don’t have one NOW. And in formal English, ‘be’ becomes WERE for all subjects: if I were, if he were, if it were.

Two things about the if-clause
PAST FORM, PRESENT MEANINGIf I had a helicopterpast formPASTFUTUREnot yesterdayright now: I don’t have oneWERE, FOR EVERY SUBJECTIyouhesheitwetheywerewas‘If I was’ is heard in speech;‘were’ is the correct written form.
Past tense here is an 'unreal' signal, not past time; and be becomes were for every subject.
Step 2

When to Use It

If I had twenty crores,I would develop that land.In reality: I don’t have it.
Use 1

Imaginary present situations

The opposite of reality, right now.
  • If I had twenty crores, I would develop that land myself. (I don’t have it)
  • If we owned the adjacent plot, the layout would be perfect. (we don’t own it)
  • If she spoke Kannada, the Bengaluru posting would be easy for her. (she doesn’t)
IFRESULTprices crashed 40%I would buy thewhole floorNOWFUTUREunlikely
Use 2

Unlikely future events

It could technically happen, but the speaker doubts it.
  • If prices crashed 40%, I would buy the whole floor. (I don’t expect a crash)
  • If he offered me double salary, I would still refuse. (he probably won’t)
IyouIf I were youI would get the title checked.
Use 3

Advice with ‘If I were you’

The most useful Second Conditional in daily life.
  • If I were you, I would get the title checked before paying a rupee.
  • If I were in your place, I would not mix family money with business.
  • I wouldn’t sign that agreement if I were you.
wouldcertain resultcouldability / possibilitymightmaybe
Use 4

Could and might in the result

Would = certain result; could = ability/possibility; might = maybe.
  • If we had a bigger team, we could handle three projects at once.
  • If you talked to him directly, he might agree.
  • If the society allowed it, we could build a fourth floor.

First vs. Second — The Believability Test

The grammar follows your belief, not the facts:
SentenceWhat the speaker believes
If I get the loan, I will buy the flat. (First)Loan approval is realistic — waiting for it.
If I got the loan, I would buy the flat. (Second)Loan approval looks doubtful — just imagining.
If she calls, I will explain. (First)She may well call.
If she called, I would explain. (Second)She probably won’t call.
Same words, different tense, different world. Choose the conditional that matches how likely YOU think the condition is.

Step 4

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
Second Conditional ख़याली दुनिया की बात है — जो अभी सच नहीं है।
अगर मेरे पास पैसे होते, तो मैं वह दुकान ख़रीद लेता।
If I had the money, I would buy that shop.
हिंदी का ‘होता / लेता / करता’ (…ता form दोनों तरफ़) = unreal का पक्का signal। English में वही काम past tense + would करता है।
‘If I were you’ रट लो — ‘अगर मैं तुम्हारी जगह होता’ का fixed अनुवाद। I के साथ भी was नहीं, were।
ध्यान रहे: ‘If I had money’ का मतलब बीता हुआ कल नहीं — मतलब है ‘अभी नहीं हैं’। Past tense यहाँ सिर्फ़ इशारा है कि बात imaginary है।
Step 5

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
If I was you, I would wait for a better rate.
If I were you, I would wait for a better rate.
Unreal ‘be’ = were for all subjects. ‘If I was’ is heard in speech, but ‘were’ is the correct written form.
If I would have more time, I would learn French.
If I had more time, I would learn French.
Would never enters the if-clause. Simple past only.
If he had a car, he will drive to work.
If he had a car, he would drive to work.
Past in the if-clause commits you to would, not will. Don’t mix families.
If I have wings, I would fly. (imaginary)
If I had wings, I would fly.
Imaginary present needs past tense in the if-clause.
If she knew his address, she can visit him.
If she knew his address, she could visit him.
Unreal result could, not can.
I would bought that plot if it were cheaper.
I would buy that plot if it were cheaper.
Would + base verb (buy). ‘Would + V2’ doesn’t exist.
Step 6

Signal Words

Second Conditional signals:
Imaginary language: if I were, if I had, if we owned, suppose...
‘If I were you’ — advice formula
would / could / might in the result clause
Hindi ‘…ता, तो …ता’ pattern (hota, to leta)
