Zero Article & Advanced Article Use

Intermediate–Advanced50 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

The third option nobody teaches: NO article at all — the ‘zero article’. General statements (Water is precious), most proper nouns (India, Diwali, Hindi), and the institution words (school, work, home, bed) all take nothing. This chapter also settles the country puzzle — why plain ‘India’ but ‘THE USA’ — and the special powers of the: the rich, the Ganga, the Himalayas, playing the tabla.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
General statements
plural or uncountable + general meaning ZERO article Water is precious. Plots appreciate faster than flats.
Institutions
school, work, home, bed, jail, court (as purpose) ZERO She went to work. He’s in jail.
The country rule
Plain names zero (India, Nepal). Names with Republic/States/Kingdom/plural the (the USA, the UAE, the Netherlands).

The golden rule of institutions: no article = the PURPOSE, the = the BUILDING. ‘He went to school’ = to study. ‘He went to THE school’ = walked to that building (maybe to meet the principal). Same pair: in bed (sleeping) vs. on the bed (sitting on it); in court (facing trial) vs. in the court (inside the room).
