Module 5 · Articles & Prepositions
A/An vs. The
Step 1
Quick Look
THE is the hardest word in English for Hindi speakers — because Hindi manages perfectly without it. The entire chapter reduces to one question: does the LISTENER already know WHICH one you mean? Yes the. No a/an. Everything else — second mentions, unique things, superlatives — is just that question wearing different clothes.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
The one question
Does the listener know WHICH one? Known/specific THE. Any one/new A/AN.
The story pattern
First mention: a
every mention after: the. I met A buyer today. THE buyer wants a corner unit.
Unique things
Only one exists
the: the sun, the sky, the government, the internet, the market rate.
The golden rule: A/AN introduces; THE points. ‘A buyer called’ brings a stranger into the conversation. ‘The buyer called’ assumes you both already know him. Use THE too early and the listener thinks: ‘WHICH buyer? You never told me about any buyer.’
A / AN introduces — THE points
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
First mention vs. second mention
New information takes a/an; once introduced, it earns the.
- We visited a farmhouse near Shukratal. The farmhouse has its own tube-well.
- She showed me a draft and an annexure. The draft was fine; the annexure had errors.
- A watchman and a gardener applied. We hired the gardener.
Use 2
Shared knowledge — you both know which one
No earlier mention needed if context makes it obvious.
- Close the gate, please. (our gate — obvious)
- The registry got postponed. (the one we’re both dealing with)
- Ask the accountant to release the payment. (our accountant, that payment)
Use 3
One of a kind
Unique in the world or in the shared context.
- The sun sets behind the tower in winter.
- The government revised the circle rates.
- The internet is down in the whole sector.
Use 4
Superlatives, ordinals, and ‘the only/same’
Best, first, only, same — these words point at ONE, so the is automatic.
- This is the best location on the whole stretch.
- He was the first investor to book — and the only one to pay upfront.
- We use the same lawyer for all our deals.
Use 5
A/AN for ‘any one’ and rates
One unspecified member of a group; also per-unit pricing.
- I need a plumber, any good plumber. (not a specific one)
- He earns fifty thousand a month. (per month)
- The rate is ninety rupees a square foot.
One question decides the article
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
जानता है the: दरवाज़ा बंद कर दो Close THE door. (कौन-सा door — दोनों जानते हैं)
नहीं जानता / कोई भी a/an: मुझे एक plumber चाहिए I need A plumber.
कहानी का नियम: पहली बार a, उसके बाद the — मैं एक buyer से मिला। (वह) buyer corner unit चाहता है।
I met A buyer. THE buyer wants a corner unit.
हिंदी में जहाँ ‘वह/वही/उस’ छुपा हो, वहाँ the: उसी वकील से THE same lawyer। सबसे अच्छा THE best (superlative के साथ the हमेशा)।
और rate बताने में a = ‘प्रति’: नब्बे रुपये फ़ुट ninety rupees A square foot।
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why
I bought the new phone yesterday. (first time mentioning it)
I bought a new phone yesterday.
First mention introduces a. ‘The’ makes the listener ask: which phone?
A sun rises in the east.
The sun rises in the east.
One sun exists the, always.
He is one of the best broker in this area.
He is one of the best brokers in this area.
Article is right — but ‘one of the + PLURAL’. Two rules in one trap.
She is a same girl I told you about.
She is the same girl I told you about.
Same points at one specific person the same, always.
Please open a window — it’s stuffy. (there’s only one window)
Please open the window.
Both know which window the. (A window is fine only if several exist and any will do.)
This is a first project of our company.
This is the first project of our company.
Ordinals (first, second, last) point at one the.
Step 5
Signal Words
Decision triggers:
First mention / any one aanSecond mentionshared context‘woh wala’ feeling the
Unique: sun, moon, sky, government, internet, market the
best, first, last, only, same the (automatic)
Rates: per month/kg/foot a month, a kilo, a square foot
