So vs. Such

Intermediate35 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Both mean ‘itna/aisa’ — the difference is what follows. SO grabs an adjective or adverb alone (so beautiful, so quickly). SUCH grabs a NOUN, with or without an adjective (such a beautiful house, such nonsense). One question decides everything: is there a noun at the end of the phrase?
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
SO + adjective/adverb
The location is so good. / He replied so quickly.
SUCH (+ a/an) + adj + NOUN
It is such a good location. / They are such reliable partners. / such bad traffic
The result pattern
so/such + ... + THAT: The demand was so high that we closed bookings early.

The golden rule: find the noun. No noun SO (so expensive). Noun present SUCH (such an expensive flat). And the a/an rule inside such: singular countable noun such A/AN (such a mess); plural or uncountable no article (such delays, such patience). Bonus seat: so many/so much/so few/so little — quantities always take SO.

Nothing but the quality word after it.
  • The corner unit is so bright in the mornings.
  • Why is the registrar’s office so crowded today?
  • He speaks so convincingly that buyers relax immediately.
suchasmoothregistry the noun pulls such
Use 2

SUCH — the noun magnet

With singular countables, such a/an; with plurals and uncountables, bare such.
  • It was such a smooth registry — done in ninety minutes.
  • They are such difficult negotiators.
  • We faced such bad weather during the slab work.

  • It was such a good offer that we didn’t counter.
  • There was so much confusion that the meeting was postponed.

Step 3

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
दोनों ‘इतना/ऐसा’ हैं — फ़ैसला noun करता है:
सिर्फ़ ख़ूबी बतानी है (noun नहीं) SO: इतना महँगा so expensive। इतनी जल्दी so quickly।
ख़ूबी + चीज़ (noun है) SUCH: इतना महँगा flat such AN expensive flat। इतने अच्छे लोग such good people।
such के अंदर a/an का नियम: अकेली गिनती वाली चीज़ such A (such a mess); बहुवचन या बिना गिनती कुछ नहीं (such delays, such patience)।
मात्रा हमेशा SO के साथ: इतने सारे so many; इतना सारा so much। और नतीजा जोड़ना हो तो that: इतनी गर्मी थी कि AC फेल हो गया It was SO hot THAT the AC gave up।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
It is a so beautiful house.
It is such a beautiful house.
Noun present (house) such. And such swallows the article: such a, never ‘a so’.
The traffic was such heavy that we missed the slot.
The traffic was so heavy that we missed the slot.
No noun after the phrase — heavy stands alone so.
He is such intelligent.
He is so intelligent. / He is such an intelligent man.
Such demands a noun — give it one or switch to so.
They gave us so a good discount.
They gave us such a good discount.
‘So a’ does not exist — the noun pulls such.
There were so much people at the launch.
There were so many people at the launch.
People are countable so many (Chapter 1’s tribes).
It was such a terrible news.
It was such terrible news.
News is uncountable no a/an inside such.
Step 5

Signal Words

The one-question test:
No noun so (so costly, so fast)
Noun present such (+ a/an if singular countable)
Quantities so many/much/few/little
Result so/such ... that
Uncountables inside such no article (such news, such advice)
