How to Learn 200 Verbs Without Dying of Boredom

Regular verbs add -ed and go home (work–worked–worked). Irregular verbs break the rules — but they break them in PATTERNS. This list is organised by pattern, not alphabet, because the brain stores sounds in families: sing–sang–sung pulls ring–rang–rung along for free. Learn one family a day, chant the three forms aloud, and write one sentence with any V3 (the form your Perfect tenses and passives from Modules 1 and 6 run on).

V1 = base (go), V2 = past (went), V3 = past participle (gone) — the form after have/has/had and after be in the passive.

The Danger Zone — 10 Pairs India Mixes Up Daily

1
LIE (लेटना: lie–lay–lain) vs. LAY (रखना: lay–laid–laid) — ‘I lay down at 2’ (past of lie) vs. ‘I laid the file on the desk’.
2
HANG (टाँगना: hung–hung) vs. HANG (फाँसी: hanged–hanged) — pictures are hung; convicts were hanged.
3
RISE (ख़ुद उठना: rose–risen — no object) vs. RAISE (उठाना: raised–raised — needs an object). Prices rise; the government raises duty.
4
FIND (पाना: found) vs. FOUND (स्थापित करना: founded–founded) — ‘He founded the company in 1999.’
5
FALL (गिरना: fell–fallen) vs. FELL (काट गिराना: felled–felled) — trees are felled.
6

7
BEAT–BEAT–BEATEN — the V2 doesn’t change: ‘We beat them last year’ (not ‘beated’).
8
READ–READ–READ — spelling frozen, sound changes: present ‘reed’, past ‘red’.
9
GOT vs. GONE — He has GOT a flat (possession) vs. He has GONE to the flat (departure). And ‘gotten’ is American; ‘got’ is standard Indian/British V3.

The Revision System

Week 1: Families 1–2 (27 verbs). Week 2: Family 3 in its three sound-groups. Weeks 3–4: Family 4, one sub-group per day. Daily drill: pick 5 verbs, say V1–V2–V3 aloud three times, then write one Present Perfect sentence (has/have + V3) and one passive sentence (be + V3) — the two structures from Modules 1 and 6 that live or die on the V3 form.
