Wish Sentences & Were To

Intermediate–Advanced50 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

WISH is the conditional family’s soul — pure desire without the if. It follows the same one-step-back logic: wish + past for present desires, wish + past perfect for regrets, wish + would for things you want OTHERS to change. And IF ONLY is wish with extra feeling. This chapter is the grammar of ‘kaash’.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Present desire
wish+Simple Past
I wish I had a bigger office. (I don’t)
Past regret
wish+Past Perfect
I wish I had bought that plot. (I didn’t)
Wanting change
wish+would+V1
I wish he would stop calling at midnight. (he keeps doing it)

The golden rule: wish NEVER takes present tense for the thing wished about. ‘I wish I have money’ is impossible — the whole point of wish is that reality is different, so the verb steps back: have had, did had done, does would do. And with ‘be’: I wish I WERE, he WERE, it WERE.

Wish steps the verb one step back
ABOUT NOWREALITYI don’t have abigger office.have→hadWISHI wish I had abigger office.wish+Simple PastABOUT THE PASTREALITYI didn’t buythat plot.did→had doneWISHI wish I had boughtthat plot.wish+had+V3OTHERS’ BEHAVIOURREALITYHe keeps callingat midnight.does→would doWISHI wish he would stopcalling at midnight.wish+would+V1
Reality is on top, the wish underneath: have → had, did → had done, does → would do.
Step 2

When to Use It

I wish we had a corner unitin that tower. REALITYwe don’t have onepresent→past
Use 1

WISH + past — a different present

You want reality to be different right now.
  • I wish we had a corner unit in that tower. (we don’t)
  • She wishes she knew the owner personally.
  • I wish I were twenty-five again.
I wish I had investedbefore the expressway announcement. REALITYI didn’t investpast→had + V3
Use 2

WISH + past perfect — regret about the past

The ‘kaash maine...’ pattern. Cannot be undone.
  • I wish I had invested before the expressway announcement.
  • He wishes he had never signed that guarantee.
  • We wish we had hired a structural engineer from day one.
I wish the tenants wouldpay on the first of the month. REALITYthey pay latepresent→would + V1
Use 3

WISH + would — irritation and desired change

For other people’s (or things’) behaviour you want changed. Not for yourself.
  • I wish the tenants would pay on the first of the month.
  • I wish it would stop raining — the slab work is stuck.
  • She wishes her neighbours would keep the corridor clean.
I wish I had listened.WISHIF ONLYIf only I had listened!FEELINGif onlywish
Use 4

IF ONLY — wish, amplified

Same grammar, stronger emotion.
  • If only I had listened to my father!
  • If only the approval came through faster.
  • If only he would understand the market reality.
HOPEI hope the loangets approved.WISHI wish the loanhad got approved.normal tenseshifted tense
Use 5

HOPE vs. WISH — the critical difference

HOPE = realistic desire, normal tenses. WISH = contrary to reality, shifted tenses.
  • I hope the loan gets approved. (realistic — it may)
  • I wish the loan had got approved. (it was rejected — regret)
  • I hope you pass. / I wish you had passed. (before vs. after the result)
Hope or wish?
BEFORE THE RESULTstill possible: the door is openAFTER THE RESULTalready different from what you wantRESULTHOPEI hope you pass.I hope the loan gets approved.normal tensesउम्मीद बाक़ी हैWISHI wish you had passed.I wish the loan had got approved.shifted tensesबात हाथ से निकल चुकी या हक़ीक़त उलट है
Hope looks at something still possible. Wish looks at something that is already different from reality.
Step 3

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
WISH = ‘काश’ — जो सच नहीं है, उसकी चाहत। इसीलिए wish के बाद tense एक क़दम पीछे जाता है।
काश मेरे पास बड़ा office होता। I wish I had a bigger office. (present की चाहत past tense)
काश मैंने वह plot ख़रीद लिया होता। I wish I had bought that plot. (past का पछतावा past perfect)
काश वह रात में फ़ोन करना बंद कर दे! I wish he would stop calling at night. (दूसरों की आदत बदलने की चाहत would)
HOPE और WISH का फ़र्क़ रट लो: उम्मीद बाक़ी है hope (I hope it rains)। बात हाथ से निकल चुकी या हक़ीक़त उलट है wish (I wish it had rained)।
Step 4

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
I wish I have more time.
I wish I had more time.
Wish pushes the verb one step back — present desire takes past tense.
I wish I would have bought it.
I wish I had bought it.
Past regret = wish + had + V3. ‘Would have’ never follows wish for your own past.
I wish I was taller.
I wish I were taller.
Unreal ‘be’ after wish = were, for every subject — same as If I were.
I wish I would work harder. (about yourself)
I wish I worked harder. / If only I worked harder.
Wish + would is for OTHERS’ behaviour — not your own. For yourself, use past tense.
I hope I had passed the exam. (result already out, you failed)
I wish I had passed the exam.
Reality already contrary wish, not hope.
I wish that he stops smoking.
I wish he would stop smoking.
Wanting someone to change wish + would + base verb.
Step 5

Signal Words

Choosing the right wish:
About NOW, contrary to fact wish + past (had, knew, were)
About the PASTregret wish + had + V3
About OTHERS’ behaviour / repeated annoyance wish + would
Still possible, realistic HOPE + normal tense (not wish at all)
Extra emotion If only (same grammar as wish)
