Prepositions of Time

Intermediate50 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

The in/on/at trio’s final assignment: TIME. The system is a pyramid — AT for exact points (5 o’clock, noon), ON for days and dates (Monday, 15th August), IN for anything bigger (months, years, seasons). Then the working pairs every professional needs: by vs. until, for vs. since, during vs. for — the difference between ‘payment by Friday’ and ‘payment until Friday’ has cost people real money.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
The pyramid
AT + clock points (at 5, at noon, at midnight, at lunchtime) ON + days & dates (on Monday, on 15th August) IN + bigger (in July, in 2026, in winter, in the morning)
The zero club
today, tomorrow, yesterday, and last/next/this/every + time
NO preposition (see you next Monday)
Deadline vs. duration
BY Friday = at or before Friday (deadline) | UNTIL Friday = continuously up to Friday (duration)

The golden rule of deadlines: BY = latest moment something must HAPPEN; UNTIL = how long a state CONTINUES. ‘Pay by the 10th’ = deadline. ‘The offer is open until the 10th’ = it stays open, then closes. Writing ‘until’ where you mean ‘by’ in a payment clause turns a deadline into a window — check every agreement for this.

The time pyramid: AT → ON → IN
AT EXACT POINTSclock timesat 11:30at noonat midnightat lunchtimealso: at the moment · at present · at DiwaliON DAYS & DATEScircle it on a calendaron Mondayon 15th Auguston Republic Dayday + part of day: on Monday morning — the day winsIN BIGGER UNITSmonths · years · seasonsin Julyin 2026in winterin the morningthe lone exception: at night
Points take AT, days take ON, anything bigger takes IN — so never “in Monday”.
Step 2

When to Use It

at 11:30at noonat sunsetat nightat midnightat lunchtime
Use 1

AT — points on the clock (and fixed point-phrases)

Exact times and the frozen expressions.
  • The registry slot is at 11:30.
  • We start at noon and wind up at sunset.
  • at night, at midnight, at lunchtime, at the moment, at present
  • Festivals as seasons: at Diwali, at Holi (the festive period)
MARCH3SUNDAYon Sundayon 3rd Marchon Republic Dayon Monday morning
Use 2

ON — days and dates

Anything you can circle on a calendar. Day + part of day also takes on.
  • The possession ceremony is on Sunday.
  • The token was paid on 3rd March.
  • We’re closed on Republic Day.
  • on Monday morning, on Friday evening (day named on wins)
in September in 2027 in the monsoon in the morning
Use 3

IN — months, years, seasons, and parts of the day

The big containers of time; also in = ‘after this much time’.
  • Bookings open in September; possession is due in 2027.
  • Construction slows in the monsoon.
  • Site visits happen in the morning; paperwork in the evening. (no day named in)
  • The lawyer will revert in two days. (= after two days)

The working pairs — by/until, for/since, during/for, from...to

Where contracts live or die.
  • Submit the file by Friday. / The counter stays open until 2. (deadline vs. duration)
  • We’ve held this inventory for eight months — since November. (for + length, since + start: Module 1’s rule)
  • It rained during the ceremony — for two full hours. (during + event name, for + measured length)
  • The camp runs from 10 to 4, Monday to Saturday.
BY or UNTIL? Deadline vs. duration

Hindi uses one word for both. English must choose: BY marks a deadline, UNTIL marks a duration.
Step 3

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
Time का pyramid: सबसे छोटा बिंदु AT (at 5 baje, at noon); दिन/तारीख़ ON (on Monday, on 15 August); उससे बड़ा सब IN (in July, in 2026, in winter)।
‘सुबह में’ in the morning, पर दिन का नाम आते ही on जीतता है: सोमवार सुबह ON Monday morning।
रात का अपवाद रट लो: at night (‘in the night’ आम बोलचाल में सुनोगे, पर standard है at night)।
Zero club: आज/कल/परसों और last/next/this/every वाले शब्दों के आगे कुछ नहीं — कल मिलते हैं See you tomorrow (‘on tomorrow’ नहीं!); अगले हफ़्ते next week (‘in next week’ नहीं!)।
पैसों वाला फ़र्क़ — BY बनाम UNTIL: 10 तारीख़ तक payment कर दो (deadline) Pay BY the 10th। Offer 10 तारीख़ तक खुला है (तब तक चलता रहेगा) open UNTIL the 10th। Agreement में until लिख दिया जहाँ by चाहिए था — deadline खिड़की बन जाती है।
और ‘दो घंटे से’ for two hours (‘since two hours’ कभी नहीं — since के साथ सिर्फ़ starting point: since Monday)।
