The Complete Conditionals Map
Every conditional and wish pattern from this module, on one page.
| Type | Formula | Hindi feeling | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero (Present Real) | If + present, present | अगर... तो (हर बार) | If you heat ice, it melts. |
| First (Future Real) | If + present, will + V1 | अगर... तो (होगा) | If he agrees, we will sign. |
| Second (Present Unreal) | If + past/were, would + V1 | अगर... होता, तो ...ता | If I had money, I would invest. |
| Past Real | If + past, past | अगर... था, तो ...ता था | If it rained, the basement flooded. |
| Third (Past Unreal) | If + had V3, would have V3 | अगर... होता, तो ...चुका होता | If I had known, I would have come. |
| Future Unreal | If + past / were to, would + V1 | अगर कभी... हो जाए | If he were to resign, work would stall. |
| Mixed: past present | If + had V3, would + V1 | तब... होता, तो आज... होता | If I had saved, I would own a flat now. |
| Mixed: present past | If + past/were, would have V3 | अगर... होता, तो उस दिन... | If he were honest, he would have admitted it. |
| Wish (present) | wish + past / were | काश... होता | I wish I had a bigger office. |
| Wish (past regret) | wish + had + V3 | काश... लिया होता | I wish I had bought that plot. |
| Wish (change/annoyance) | wish + would + V1 | काश... कर दे | I wish he would pay on time. |
Five rules that solve most conditional confusion:
- Will and would NEVER enter the if-clause. The condition takes a simple tense; will/would live in the result.
- Unreal = one step back in time. Present ideas past tense; past ideas past perfect.
- Unreal ‘be’ is WERE for every subject: if I were, if she were, I wish it were.
- In mixed conditionals, each clause carries its own time — read ‘now/today’ vs. ‘that day/last year’.
- Unless already contains ‘not’. Hope = still realistic; wish = contrary to reality.
